In 1989, PADI introduced Project AWARE (Aquatic World Awareness, Responsibility and Education), responding to a growing demand to unify the voice of the dive community in preserving our aquatic environments. Originally launched as a ten-year effort, PADI professionals, divers and the international dive community embraced Project AWARE so enthusiastically that it became an ongoing project.
The mission and purpose of Project AWARE is:
- To cultivate interest in programs and initiatives within the dive community to preserve the aquatic environment and its resources
- To teach the public about the importance of, and our responsibility to protect the aquatic world
- To develop and disseminate educational materials, create public awareness, promote and organize industry efforts, provide direct financial support for worthwhile environmental endeavors, create innovative projects, and create alliances and partnerships with other organizations to strengthen common goals and commitment to the conservation of the aquatic environment
- To be committed to the conservation and preservation of aquatic environments and their resources
- To accomplish these goals by reaching people internationally who share this interest in the aquatic world, those who currently work to preserve it, and those who remain unaware that the aquatic world needs help
